When my friend and colleague and mentor Kurt Eisen lost his struggle with cancer in September 2019, I knew that it was art or literature or music—or something like that—to which I would turn, to privately and publicly process my feelings of longing and love, grief and gratitude. It is difficult to talk about the reality of living through a pandemic without making reference to the ways in which many of us, young and old, are attempting to escape this reality. We are escaping reality in a variety of ways: many Nintendo Switch owners have flung themselves en masse into the serene island-scape of Animal Crossing: New Horizons ; meanwhile, many Netflix subscribers have strapped themselves into the trainwreck of Tiger King .
